Happy New Year guys! I hope you had a wonderful and delicious set of holidays and feasts these past couple of weeks! You know, I had a plan. Quite the delicious one at that – a masterpiece to start off this year’s Midweek Specials for you guys. But… well, I’ve been up to my ears in food these last three weeks, and, after a quick glance around my peers, I realized, I wasn’t the only one still feeling kind of full. So, pushing the hard and heavy to a back burner, I decided to get rolling with a simple, refreshing and quick-to-make salad with a fruity twist.

GW2 Eggs Beetletun & Ascalonian Salad
Happy New Year! I hope you guys had a blast welcoming 2017~! If you had the kind of party we had, your tummy and your head might just feel a bit on the fuzzy side of things, just like mine do… I have to admit, I never had a “real”, movie’esque hangover, so I can’t give any educated expert advice on the usual hangover-foods, but as a general rule of thumb, listening to your stomach never hurts when something’s amiss. Doing exactly that with my head in the fridge resulted – to everyone’s surprise – in me whipping up an omelette, something I haven’t done in years.

Quince Soup with Crispy Chanterelle & Potato Topping

As the usual Christmas hubbub goes, it’s been a very… hearty, meaty and heavy weekend. So, inner vampire satisfied for the time being, I thought cooking up something along the vegetarian and light – yet comfy enough to fight off the bitter cold outside – lines would be the perfect thing to do to close off this fantastic kitchen-year.

GW2 Infused Vinegars
After my discovery of the one and lonely bottle of Vegetable Oil in my ingredients tab that led to last week’s Infused Oils, I couldn’t help but look further down the list to find… exactly one type of vinegar. Rice Vinegar, what a shame! A huge world of aromas limited to one kind… one with not much of a bouquet at that. I don’t think I could live with that on this side of the screen – while I only use about 3 different oils on a somewhat regular basis, my vinegar collection is a rather large one. I like that special zing here and there, what can I say~
GW2 Infused Oils
My favorite time of the winter months has arrived! On and off the screen, the weeks before Christmas are something I really look forward to. On screen, my favorite Tyrian festival of the year is due to arrive soon – that impulse to stare up into the skies and search for the Infinitarium… Wintersday really makes me feel like a little kid sometimes! – off the screen I’m having a blast filling gift boxes for everyone I know with homemade yummies straight from my kitchen. Lots of chocolates, of course, but other things like chutneys, spice blends, preserves and the like as well.
Roasted Pear & Camembert Cigars with Lamb’s Lettuce & Apple-Elderflower Dressing
While I really enjoy relishing in the seasonal ingredients, I can’t help but feel a break from all the earthy aromas of early winter is in order! That feeling recently got a lot stronger when I, yet again, was admiring the beautifully arranged display of various regional mushrooms at the farmer’s market and had absolutely no desire whatsoever to buy and eat a bunch of them.

Forest Soup – Chestnuts, Mushrooms and Chocolate

You know, late autumn or early winter have their good sides, too. Sure, November over here is the textbook version of any and all November-related stereotypes from hell, a time during which you might just consider hoofing through the next best desert just to keep yourself from crawling under your bed in an attempt to hibernate through all of the gray, depressing yuck outside.

GW2 Steamed Curry Buns

The Curry returns! As I’ve mentioned last week, this week’s dish is a follow-up involving curry-leftovers – or a curry specifically made for this type of snack, if the need arises. Basically, these yummy, juicy buns work with every type of curry’esque leftovers.
GW2 Pumpkin-Orange Soup & Pumpkin Pesto
Another year, another visit by the Mad King and his sugary minions, his bad jokes and endless heaps of pumpkins. As usual, whenever it’s festival time in Tyria, hubby and I spent several long weekends in front of our screens, enjoying the Tyrian way of party’ing. Now, if you’ve had a peek at this week’s Midweek Special, you might have noticed me saying something along the lines of “Ew, pumpkins.” Well, after hours and hours of hacking, carving and slaying though what seemed like Tyria’s entire pumpkin population to honor Mad King Thorn, I couldn’t help but wonder where all those nicely carved pumpkins would go after the festival.
Scallops, Spiced Quince Preserves, Curried Pumpkin Purée & Crispy Pumpernickel Bites
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but coming up with the kind of intricate dessert – the ones that make you gawk at them in awe, quivering spoon in hand, at a ponzy restaurant – is, thanks to my not-that-sweet tooth, quite the challenge – which I happily accept every time, what with me trying my best to grow in the kitchen and all that jazz.
