Dear Chef’s Guild of Tyria,
Thank you, thank you, thank you~! Thanks to your recommendation, I ventured into the unknown, one of my favorite seafood’y ingredients in tow, and ended up with an entirely new tastebud-dancing, finger-licking, delicious experience~!

Creamy Kohlrabi & Fennel Soup with Blueberries and Goat’s Cheese
Every once in a while, I take some time to browse the menus of some Michellin-starred restaurants in the area – without any delusions of grandeur or urges to pay more for a dinner than a week’s vacation in a nice hotel on a remote island involved. The reason for this peek into these world-class kitchens is relatively simple: in recent years, a lot of those restaurants have made a habit of ditching the usual, descriptive menu in favor of a list of 2-3 main ingredients per course. An absolutely fabulous habit in my book, scrambling my neurons in exactly the right way!

Quince Soup with Crispy Chanterelle & Potato Topping

As the usual Christmas hubbub goes, it’s been a very… hearty, meaty and heavy weekend. So, inner vampire satisfied for the time being, I thought cooking up something along the vegetarian and light – yet comfy enough to fight off the bitter cold outside – lines would be the perfect thing to do to close off this fantastic kitchen-year.

GW2 Cold Wurm Stew – Wintery Chorizo Stew
Oh yes! December, winter, a “real” one no less! Unlike the last couple of “winters” it’s cold and dry enough to actually justify the mere existence of hot spiced wine on a christmas market – and to make the prospect of a wonderfully aromatic and comforting stew waiting for you at home a really good reason to look forward to the end of the day.

Forest Soup – Chestnuts, Mushrooms and Chocolate

You know, late autumn or early winter have their good sides, too. Sure, November over here is the textbook version of any and all November-related stereotypes from hell, a time during which you might just consider hoofing through the next best desert just to keep yourself from crawling under your bed in an attempt to hibernate through all of the gray, depressing yuck outside.

GW2 Meat and Winter Vegetable Stew or: Spicy Beef & Fennel Curry
I was so waiting for a chance to share this one with you guys! This was one of the first handful of GW2-inspired dishes I cooked up a few years back, and one of the first times I intentionally used the Guild’s recipe list as a source of information and inspiration. Well, it seems, the time to pull this one out of my hat has come! Finding myself flat on my back with a nasty case of the flu brought back vivid memories of a very similar situation a few years back, when this recipe came to life for the first time.

GW2 Pumpkin-Orange Soup & Pumpkin Pesto
Another year, another visit by the Mad King and his sugary minions, his bad jokes and endless heaps of pumpkins. As usual, whenever it’s festival time in Tyria, hubby and I spent several long weekends in front of our screens, enjoying the Tyrian way of party’ing. Now, if you’ve had a peek at this week’s Midweek Special, you might have noticed me saying something along the lines of “Ew, pumpkins.” Well, after hours and hours of hacking, carving and slaying though what seemed like Tyria’s entire pumpkin population to honor Mad King Thorn, I couldn’t help but wonder where all those nicely carved pumpkins would go after the festival.
GW2 Creamy Mushroom Soup
Coming back home from a heavenly vacation is never easy I suppose, but this time was exceptionally nasty. We boarded our airplane on Madeira at comfy, sunny temperatures around 28°C just to be rudely dumped into the 9°C nighttime ick of Frankfurt Airport. After a week of absence, our appartment was bonechillingly cold as well, of course, so we took the chance – after we had avoided to have both PCs running for a longer period of time during the summer in order to avoid major heatstrokes – for one hell of a content crawl through the new chapters of the GW2 living story.
GW2 Roasted Beetroot Gazpacho
Just a couple of months ago, when I was going through the Soup section of the Tyrian menu, I realized that, as much as I love beets, I’ve never, at least not that I’m aware of it, had them in a soup’ish kind of context before. Well that’s one blank that should be filled in sooner rather than later, if you like the pretty purple bulbs, don’t you think? I decided to start the beet’y soup experience with a light and summery gazpacho when, just a couple of days after making GW2-induced beet soup-related plans, the first heatwave of this year’s summer hit the mark, rather than to go with the creamy, soul-food’y recipe I had initially picked out.
Avocado-Cucumber Gazpacho, Two Ways
Several of the food-related reasons for me to love a good heatwave every once in a while are provided by the unending variety of cold soups, just asking to serve as a refreshing, speed-of-light-quick-fix tummy-filler when it’s too hot for anything else. A few weeks ago I was trying to figure out a way to skip the traditional baguette/chiabatta/toast deal and replace it with something on the healthier side of things without loosing the filling-factor of the soup – after all, I was trying to make dinner, rather than serving a bowl of… well, juice. After a couple of moments, twiddling my mental thumbs, pondering all kinds of gazpachos, juices and green smoothies, it hit me. Avocados! Oh, oh! River crabs go well with avocados! And grapefruit! Apples? <insert visual of mental sock-drawers being turned over here>.
